Every year at this time, people often find themselves under pressure to make New Year's resolutions - diet + exercise-related resolutions are by far the most common, with people keen for a healthy start to the year. According to a survey conducted by Finder, more than 1 in 3 (39%) have pledged to adopt healthier eating habits; 36% are motivated to improve their fitness, whilst 33% are committed to losing weight. You may not be surprised to know that women are more likely to set resolutions relating to their health + lifestyle - 46% of women intend to eat healthier + 38% hope to lose weight in 2024 compared to 32% and 28% of men. More women (38%) also commit to exercise more compared to men (34%).
Research from the University of Scranton found just 8% of people achieve their resolutions, and even less conservative estimates put this figure at a dire 20%. According to global research conducted by Strava, January 12 is the date you are most likely to break your resolution - finder.com.au
So, why do we insist on repeating the same pattern every January, when it's almost definitely doomed to fail?
A new year certainly does feel like the perfect opportunity to 'start fresh', but it doesn't have to be a case of completely upending our lives to attempt the impossible.
Instead of fixating on short-term goals like rapid weight loss (which is never something we should be aiming for anyway), consider adopting habits that can transform your entire year in a holistic + all-round healthy way.
Pilates isn't just a physical workout; it's a mindful practice that nurtures the body + soul. Here's some ideas that may help you make Pilates a regular, sustainable + fulfilling part of your life as you step into the fresh chapter of a new year:
#1 - Set Realistic Goals:
Begin by setting realistic + achievable goals that align with your own personal intentions. Rather than fixating on quick fixes, focus on the long-term benefits of Pilates, such as improved flexibility, pain-reduction + increased overall physical + mental well-being. This approach will help you stay committed to the practice beyond the initial excitement of the new year.
#2 - Start Slow (or Just Jump In!) + Be Consistent:
Pilates is definitely a journey, not a race. Start slow, allowing your body to adapt to the apparatus, movements + transitions. Consistency is key, so commit to a manageable schedule that you can realistically maintain. This may look like beginning with one or two sessions per week + gradually build up as your strength + endurance grow.

#3 - Embrace the Mind-Body Connection:
One of the unique aspects of Pilates is its emphasis on the mind-body connection. Take the time to be present during classes, focusing on your breath + the sensations in your body. This mindfulness will not only enhance the effectiveness of your workouts but will also contribute to stress reduction + improved mental clarity.
#4 - Celebrate Small Wins
Take time to acknowledge + celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Whether it's mastering a challenging move, moving more freely + with more control or simply consistently sticking to your Pilates routine, recognising your progress will boost your confidence + reinforce the habit.
