In a world obsessed with body image + societal standards of beauty, along with the added saturation of toxic messaging from social media, we can find ourselves on a relentless pursuit of the "perfect" physique. This often leads to feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem + a disconnect between mind + body.
This is why, at Flow State Movement, our approach is strongly grounded in a body-neutral, anti-diet + mindful foundation.

Since the resurgence in popularity around the early 2000's, Pilates has commonly been marketed as a method of exercise that can give practitioners a 'dancer's body', reinforced with images of fit, typically thin, able-bodied women on a reformer or a mat. However, the original Pilates method, 'Contrology', was borne from Joseph Pilates' own determination to overcome ill-health that wracked him as a young man. Unlike traditional forms of exercise that often prioritise aesthetics + weight loss, Pilates is first-and-foremost a health-building method, not a body-building one, despite what the internet tells you!
“Contrology is not a system of haphazard exercises designed to produce only bulging muscles.” - Joseph Pilates
In fact, he stated very clearly that his method "was conceived to limber and stretch muscles and ligaments so that your body will be as supple as that of a cat, not muscular like a brewery-truck horse or professional weightlifter you so much admire at the circus”.
Key Principles to a Body Neutral Practice
In more contemporary terms, Pilates is possibly the best way to shift the focus away from external appearance + towards functional movement + strength, to help you develop a more positive relationship with your body.
The secret may lie in the six Pilates principles (previously covered in their own individual articles here). Each of the principles - Breath, Concentration, Centre, Control, Precision, Flow - encourage a focus on the present moment, which in turn cultivates mindfulness so you can tune into your body + develop a deeper awareness + control of your functional movement.
In addition to its physical benefits, Pilates also has profound effects on mental well-being. The mindful approach to movement encourages you to let go of distractions + connect with your breath, fostering a sense of calm + relaxation. Many people report feeling more centred + grounded after a Pilates session, making it an effective tool for stress management + mental clarity.
Pilates offers a holistic approach to health and well-being that goes beyond physical fitness. By promoting a mindful + body-neutral approach, Pilates empowers individuals to cultivate a sense of balance + harmony in mind, body + spirit.
